SMITH HENRY - THACH OVER MIDWAY_edited.jpg

Thach over Midway

LCDR (Later Admiral) John Thach famously developed the 'Thach Weave' tactic to counter the superior maneuverability of the Japanese A6M zero. My painting depicts Thach in his F4F Wildcat after shooting down a zero during the Battle of Midway. On 4th June 1942 Thach shot down 3 zeros in one day, his wingman claiming another.

I used several period photographs to create this painting, including images taken by the Japanese whilst bombing Midway. The painting was exhibited at the Guild of Aviation Artists Annual Exhibition 2026 at the Shuttleworth Collection.

Oil on MDF panel.
